Things have been quiet here

Things have been quiet here for a few days: I’ve moved to NYC and started a new job. Things will probably stay quiet a little bit longer while I get settled.

  1. Thanks :) I will probably get internet access at my new home in a week or so… any recommendations for high speed cable in NJ (USA)?

  3. Cox has a good deal… Providing you purchase their basic cable package. I think it works out to about 40 bucks a month.

Running through the fine print on the promo spiel they sent me says they limit bandwidth to 7gb a month per connection.

    Nice.

  4. Well… Down here in Florida they don’t even provide an email service, just the bare-bones connection, which i have no problem with.

There’s a bunch of convoluted solutions to this, such as running your own SMTP/POP server on your local machine, which is always a fun experience.

Of course, if it’s just a pop shell you need, there are plenty of hosts out there that charge very little for mail services.

  5. For cable, you’re stuck with the monopoly provider in NJ. The company I had when I was there went out of business, so I can’t recommend them.

You might have a choice when it comes to DSL, but you might be limited to Verizon.

I’ve had both now, and think the ease of configuration is the big difference. Ask if they require you to install additional software to use the service…that’s what I have to do now to use my DSL.

I always accessed my own email – both POP and IMAP without a problem. I never used their email or hosting.
